[Rovinj, Croatia] Days of Communication 2019
This week, from March 28th to 31st, Rovinj, Croatia is becoming the centre of the communication industry. Days of Communication, is a festival that has been gathering advertisers, agencies, public relations experts, media representatives and students from all over the globe, for years now.
During the three days, the seventh edition of the festival will assemble 50 Croatian and world marketing and media experts. They will bring to the table a wide range of topics, from artificial intelligence and creativity to internet privacy, voice commands and market personalized communication, all to be discussed with the participants.
Some of earlier speakers were digital media director of Donald Trump campaign Brad Parscale, global creative director of Twitter Jayanta Jenkins, Peter Sunde (co-founder of The Pirate Bay torrent portal), Alex Braun (PR expert and political consultant), Natasha Jen (partner of the Pentagram study design) and many other trend-setters of industry.
Let’s take a look at the present, peek at the future and talk about global changes!
I’m loving it – when you see it somewhere, what comes to your mind? Catchy melody and slogan of McDonald’s, right? One of the first speakers announced was Matt Biespiel, the man who managed McDonald’s communication in 118 countries around the world, who brought McDonald’s the title of the most efficient brand in the world for two consecutive years in his post as Global Marketing Director, was also the winner for the best advertiser in the world at the world’s most prestigious advertising festival in Cannes. For years Matt has been building successful marketing campaigns for Visa, Olympic games (SAD), Google, Facebook, FIFA, Coca-Cola, and many others. His lecture “Why Your Brand Needs Charisma to Grow” is definitely a must see!
I am a copycat, you are a copycat, so is he! That’s what Mark Earls says, bestselling author on marketing and behavioural expert in the UK. He is an author of HERD – How to Change Mass Behaviour, I’ll Have What She’s Having – Mapping Social Behaviour, Welcome to the Creative Age and many others. On Days of Communication Earls will be presented by giving ‘#CopyCopyCopy‘ lecture. Participants will have the opportunity to hear that copying – not the originality or the talent of a lonely genius – has long been at the core of creativity and solving problems, as civilization is thousands of years old and can not know the true originality. His somewhat controversial message to all festival participants is:
Copying is one of the greatest gifts to humanity, so why not learn to do it well?
BBC calls Oobah Butler The Banksy of journalism. His restaurant, The Shed at Dulwich was the number one rated restaurant in London, with foodies, celebrities and bloggers trying to get a table. There was only one problem with not being able to get a table. The restaurant didn’t exist! He didn’t stop there. Sending his doubles for interviews all around the world, trolling Paris Fashion Week with fake denim brand Georgio Peviani, and on top of it all, he sent his double to accept the award for the „Content Creator od the year for Online Media“. The goal was to “bring chaos to a controlled, serious atmosphere.”, he says. What he has prepared for Rovinj? We shall see.
One of the speakers is Ralph Echemendia, the only hacker who will not steal your data or block accounts. He is an ethical hacker that many world companies, such as Google, Microsoft, and NASA hired to educate on cybersecurity in the modern age, which is one of the main topics lately. „We can all get hacked, get over it.“, he says. „How safe are we?“ will give us an insight about why and how is hacking happening and how to preserve yourself from data stealing. Online safety, does not exist as far as Echemendia is asked.
Quickie in the woods?
These are only a peek of what is awaited in Days of communications. My first time attending this festival was as a student. I felt like Alice in Wonderland, I have to be honest. Apart from many impressive speakers to listen to, there are many interesting and useful workshops, panels and conversations led by experts worth to sit in on. What catches my eye this year are: „Women leading the change: make each other shine“ conversation with women on positions and anti-masterclass about Crisis communication – „We messed it up. How could we have done it better?“.
Other than that, I’m excited about a “Quickie” in the woods. It’s not as it seems. It’s even better. Every speaker after his lecture will be taken to small woods area of hotel Lone where the festival is held. This is an opportunity to meet the speaker and ask directly what interests you. Quickie shouldn’t be longer than 20 minutes, organizers say, but after all, everything is up to the audience and their interest. One advice for those who are coming to the festival – bring your bathing suits! Live streaming from the main auditorium will be available on the pool enjoying on a
