Trending Google searches in Portugal in 2017

Something really intriguing and culturally different here in Portugal is the approach to deadlines. This serene attitude in front of the stress and clogging tasks of the Portuguese people ruled over my straighten-up way of working.

Thus, with a bit delay, I just discovered a few days ago the trending search topics in 2017 that were released by Google in December 2017. It was funny to analyse them and try to interpret them with my Romanian background.

Of course, always the most confusing are the “What is it” lists. For Portugal, top growing search for this category is “What is a pangolin?”. I am still looking for the reason for finding this animal in such a high position. Maybe a native Portuguese could have an answer. Could it be because of the Google doodle for Vday?

Afterwards, we have a blue whale, Sarahah (mobile app), autumn equinox, FIFA Confederations Cup, a recipe, natural fabrics, some bacteria.

  • O que é…
  • O que é um pangolim
  • O que é o equinócio de outono
  • Chemsex o que é
  • O que é legionella
  • Sarahah o que é
  • O que é um burel
  • O que é o jogo da baleia azul
  • O que é a taça das confederações
  • O que é creme de leite
  • Spinner o que é

The most predictive fact is that the biggest growth rate of search amongst personalities in Portugal was Salvador Sobral, the first Portuguese winner of Eurovision. On the 3rd place, again Eurovision euphoria-related personality, Luisa Sobral, Salvador’s sister.

Maybe a bit surprising is the fact that almost half of the list are people who died recently: Mario Soares (politician), João Ricardo (actor), Francisco Varatojo (Macrobiotic Institute of Portugal’s director), Américo Amorim (the richest man in Portugal), and the other half are people in showbiz: Maria Leal (singer), Diogo Morgado (actor), Joana de Verona (actor). I just wonder why a footballer (such a loved sport by Portuguese people) is just at the end of the list…

National figures

  • Salvador Sobral – singer
  • Mario Soares – dead, politician
  • Luisa Sobral – Salvador’s sister
  • Maria Leal – singer
  • João Ricardo – dead, actor
  • Diogo Morgado – actor and his partner Joana
  • Joana de Verona – TV star
  • Francisco Varatojo – dead, health area
  • Américo Amorim –dead, o homem mais rico de Portugal
  • André Silva – football player
